Monday, August 4, 2025, was a full day of powerful lectures at the TOURITAGE ISP at Nahda University

The day opened with reflections on the Palermo training by Basam Abdelhakim and Aya Mamdouh, followed by Dr. Niveen Daoud’s talk on situated knowledge and materiality at Park Hill.

After the break, Dr. Eman Shaqour continued her deep dive into Palestinian architecture through conflict and rebirth, and the day wrapped up with Ahmed Farouk’s insightful case study on adaptive reuse in Bab El-Louk, Cairo.

TOURITAGE Project | Steering & Scientific Committee (SSC) Meeting – Granada, 8–10 July 2025

The TOURITAGE consortium gathered in Granada from 8 to 10 July 2025 for a productive Steering and Scientific Committee (SSC) meeting hosted by the Universidad de Granada.

Representatives from all partner institutions participated actively in discussions covering key project milestones:

  • Reports and updates on project workpackages
  • Presentations of the implemented, ongoing, and planned ISPs by each organizing institution
  • Coordination of EU students’ participation in upcoming ISPs in Tunisia and Egypt
  • Strategic planning for the final event and exhibition

The meeting was enriched with a visit to the Past View Granada – an immersive VR experience bringing 16th-century Granada to life, along with a visit to the under-construction bell tower of the ⛪ Granada Cathedral.

The meeting reinforced collaboration across the consortium and set a clear roadmap for the project’s final phase.

TOURITAGE ISP | Conclusion Day – 14 July 2025 | University of Granada

After two enriching weeks of learning, exploration, and collaboration, the TOURITAGE Intensive Study Programme concluded successfully on 14 July 2025 at the Universidad de Granada.

On the final day, student groups presented the outcomes of their workshops, showcasing creative and research-driven proposals for World Heritage sites in Córdoba and Granada. The presentations sparked engaging discussions with professors and heritage experts, who provided valuable feedback and reflections.

The event concluded with a warm certificate distribution ceremony, celebrating the efforts and dedication of participants from MENA partner universities — Arab Academy For Science, Technology and Maritime Transport – College of Engineering & Technology Coet Alamein Campus , Nahda University, Université de Gabès , Université de Jendouba — alongside international students.

A heartfelt thank you to all lecturers, organizers, and participants for making this experience truly impactful!

As part of the immersive learning experience at the Universidad de Granada, students and staff from MENA partners actively engaged in two impactful technical workshops:

  • Workshop 1: Participation, City, and Landscape in World Heritage Management – where participants discussed inclusive strategies for balancing preservation and development in heritage sites.
  • Workshop 2: Advanced Graphic and Emotional Assessment Technologies – exploring tools like digital documentation, visual storytelling, and data visualization to enrich heritage research and communication.

Participants were divided into interdisciplinary teams to work on real case studies from Córdoba and Granada, proposing innovative approaches for interpreting, preserving, and activating these World Heritage cities.

The sessions encouraged creativity, critical thinking, and collaborative problem-solving — linking academic knowledge with real-world heritage management needs.

As part of the Intensive Study Programme hosted by the Universidad de Granada, participants had the opportunity to explore some of the most iconic and historically rich sites in Andalusia, enriching their understanding of heritage conservation and sustainable tourism.

The technical visits included:

  • Museo Cuevas del Sacromonte – exploring traditional cave dwellings and local heritage
  • World Heritage Sites of Córdoba: Madinat al-Zahra and The Mosque-Cathedral
  • World Heritage Sites of Granada: Alhambra and Generalife Gardens
  • The Darro Valley and its historical landscape
  • The Maristán – a remarkable Islamic-era hospital restoration project
  • Tourism route through Hispano-Muslim monuments in the Albayzín
  • Past View Granada – an immersive VR experience bringing 16th-century Granada to life
  • Carmen de la Victoria – a beautiful traditional Andalusian villa with panoramic views

These visits provided a powerful experiential layer to the training, connecting theory with real-world heritage interpretation and tourism strategies.

We’re proud to announce the successful completion of the Intensive Study Programme (ISP) hosted by the Universidad de Granada (UGR), as part of the TOURITAGE project!

Participants from MENA partner universities — AASTMT Arab Academy For Science, Technology and Maritime TransportCollege of Engineering &Technology Coet Alamein Campus, Nahda University جامعة النهضة (Egypt), Université de Gabès (page officielle) and Université de Jendouba (Tunisia) — joined a diverse group of international students for a two-week immersive academic experience.

The theoretical component of the ISP featured a rich lineup of lectures delivered by UGR faculty and renowned guest experts, covering:

  • Heritage, City and Landscape
  • Action and Participation in World Heritage Management
  • Emotive and Sensible Heritage Cities
  • Advanced Graphic Technologies in Transformed Heritage

The program fostered collaboration, intercultural dialogue, and new insights into sustainable heritage development.

Training of Trainers

Our TOURITAGE project team participated in the « Training of Trainers » from September 3-7, 2024, at Università degli Studi di Palermo Palermo, Italy! 🎓✨ Tutors from beneficiary universities AASTMT Arab Academy For Science, Technology and Maritime TransportNahda University جامعة النهضةUniversité de JendoubaUniversité de Gabès (page officielle)Centre de Calcul El-Khawarizmi were trained on planning, implementing, managing, and assessing an Intensive Study Program focused on managing cultural heritage in tourism through the use of innovative technologies.

Day 1 Highlights (Sept 3rd):

– Professors Rossella Corrao & Calogero Vinci gave an insightful presentation on the IHeritage – ICT Platform MED Heritage , covering task management and technicalities in data gathering and heritage site modeling.

– Participants experienced hands-on demonstrations of VR & AR exhibitions, gaining insight into creating similar setups at partner campuses.

– Participants toured the UNESCO Arab-Norman sites of Palermo city center and other sites including Palatina Chapel, S. John of Eremites church, Palermo Cathedral, Cassaro (Vittorio Emanuele street) and Garibaldi Garden (Marina square), exploring the fusion of Western, Islamic, and Byzantine cultures.
